The Quick History of GYO
In 2011, I had date with an older man. I dated an older man purely for romantic reasons. I was attracted to him. I was posting on reddit to r/lgbt and r/gay with some questions and the overwhelming response from the LGBT community was ‘date your own age’ in a fairly rude tone. No I won’t.  It was on that day (June 20th) that I created r/GayYoungOld. Over the next few weeks I posted content and got a few people to read it and subscribe. Building the first 100 people was the hardest part and after that there was a natural interest and intrinsic growth. I wasn’t alone anymore…

Age is literally just a number, and numbers aren’t real things. Age isn’t real.

Now we are 10’s of thousands strong spanning many platforms with communities both online and in real life.

Our Mission and Goal
To be honest, GYO was always about more than just a place for anonymous users to talk about how they were living. I wanted to change the larger LGBT community, to respect older younger relationships as legitimate. GYO isn’t trophy boys and sugar-daddies as so many outsiders would tend to believe. We’ve seen those and they aren’t about sharing life and deep connections. Now it turns out, reshaping a community’s views is a bigger task than I had first envisioned. We would first need to build a community of our own and spread the message that GYO relationships are healthy and beneficial for the individuals and for society. We help each other, older and younger, in ways other relationships can’t. There are some difficult parts too, and that’s part of why we are here now talking sharing and living with GayYoungOld attractions and couples.

  1. I’m so happy that you have organized this group. I am a National Lecturer on LGBTQ Civil Rights and Equality. I hope to make it to one of your gatherings in 2019 in NYC. I am in Chicago.

    1. Hey thanks for your comment. I would like to organize a meetup in Chicago soon. If you know of some possible locations I will start working on dates.
